About Us

A History Of Caring

The mission of the United Way is to build better communities. We do this by providing health and human services to the citizens and school districts that make up Franklin County. We concentrate on programs that: care for those with special needs; invest in children so they can become good citizens; strengthen families at risk; and provide emergency assistance to those in need.

1953
To combat the chaos of competing charity fund drives, twelve men were appointed to organize a united fund campaign. This organization would support worthy charities in the area. They adopted the name Washington Community Chest.

1954
The first fund drive was held with a goal of $20,000 to service eight charities.

1957
With the organization continuing to thrive, the name was changed to United Fund, Inc., of Washington.

1995
Competition among non-profit organizations increased dramatically. As a result, the United Fund entered into an affiliation with the United Way of Greater St. Louis.

1997
The Henry Hartbauer Leadership Giving Program was established as a means of recognizing and honoring those individuals instrumental in forming, directing and guiding the United Fund.

1999
Due to the affiliation with United Way of Greater St. Louis, the United Fund changed its name to Washington Area United Way.

2001
The United Way continued to grow. A new name emerged - Franklin County Area United Way - better representing the area served.

2003
In 50 years our contributions have grown to over $500,000 with only 12.3 percent being used for administrative and fund raising expenses.

2006
We were able to help over 42,900 people in 35 communities through 39 United Way agencies and programs using only 14.1 cents of every dollar for administrative costs.

2010
Our mission of Building Better Communities yesterday, today, and tomorrow still continues.
